So, You Want to Be an Authority?

PSF-scepter

If you’re an online marketer who wishes to break into a certain market, one approach is to establish yourself as an authority on the given subject.

One of the best methods is to start a blog and share your expertise and experience on the given subject. Once you have established yourself, your followers will become faithful customers who may also spread the gospel of your message.

Okay, so what’s a good route for establishing yourself as an authority if you’re not super experienced in your chosen market? For many it’s tempting to ‘fake it ’till you make it’ by exaggerating your knowledge set to your prospects.

Well, that might work at first, and you might think that it will draw more followers, but sooner or later someone is going to corner you on something.

I remember way back in the early 90’s, I went to a computer expo in Miami with a friend along with another acquaintance who were both computer geeks. At the time, I didn’t know squat about computers, but I was rapidly getting interested in them, so I went along on the trip.

When we first arrived, I wandered off by myself to look at all the cool stuff. I could hear others all around me chattering the latest tech-speak. They might just as well have been speaking Greek, because that’s about how well I understood it all.

Within the first few minutes, a group of about 5 well dressed gentlemen approached me and struck up a conversation. I was a little surprised that they wanted to chat with me so I decided to have a little fun with them, and prop myself up into their league.  I was too proud to admit that I was a computer ignoramus and a newbie to the game (lol!).

The conversation went something like this:

Business Man: Hello.

Me: Hello, an interesting expo, isn’t it?

Another Business dude: Yes it is. Where are you from?

Me: Fort Myers… and you?

Business dude: Miami. Do you have a company?

Me: Ah.. Yes, I have small company. (Actually, I was managing a TV repair shop, and freelancing at the time).

Business dude: Are you in hardware, or software?

Me: (Thinking, hmmm, which is better?) Ah, It’s a software company. (I was lying like a dog in July!).

Now I had peaked all of their attention.

Business dude: What type of software?

Me: Ahhh, business software. I help provide businesses with customized programs to help their accounting. (Man I’m good, I’m impressing the heck out of these guys.  This is hilarious!).

One of the other Business dudes: Do you have a development team?

Me: Yes I do. (Oh, the B.S. is getting deeper by the syllable!).

Other business dude: How many in your team?

Me: Ah, It’s a small team, only 10 people at the moment. (Starting to sweat a little now because the conversation is progressing farther than I’d like it to).

Still another business dude: What’s your IPO?

Me: (Thinking to myself – WTF is an IPO?!!!!)

The room temperature is suddenly getting much hotter.

Me: Ahh… IPO?… Oh… well actually I don’t need one. I just prefer to work without ’em… um, but I’ll consider getting one someday! (…d’oh!)

At that instance, they all did a 180 degree turn in perfect unison and immediately walked away. I had totally PWNED myself!!! They had my number, and they weren’t going to waste another second of their time on me.

Not only was it embarrassing as heck, but I lost all credibility. Suppose I would have pulled something like this on the internet and got busted? My credibility would be lost forever!

I walked away, a little hot and sweaty and I’m sure my face was red as a beet with embarrassment. Aside from continuing to ask myself “WTF is an IPO?!”, I learned an important lesson.

If you want to network with people and learn from them, be yourself! If I would have just been upfront with them and let them know that I was here to learn more about the computer business, who knows how I could have benefited from the conversation.

Perhaps our encounter would have led to an entirely new and interesting opportunity at some point. At the very least, they might have given me some great pointers at learning the ropes, and where I should focus my resources.

At the time, they were way out of my league and I thought for a moment that I could run with them just by blowing a little smoke up their patootie-holes.

If you’re a beginner, let your audience know that you are.  Don’t act like an immature moron like I did!

For example, with internet business you could frame your own blog as a ‘learning together’ experience where you share your ups and downs on the journey so that others can learn with you.

You’d be surprised at where that will take you. No web of white lies to keep track of, and you’ll go very far, very quickly.

You’ll develop great relationships with your followers who will also be happy to share their experiences as well. People love to see how others can go from nothing to success.

Being honest with your audience will ultimately give you an iron-clad authority as time goes on.

Building a strong foundation in honesty and credibility is absolutely priceless for both you and your followers.

Blazing a trail to prosperity that others can follow, and sharing it with them along the way. Now that’s a legacy worth leaving!

8 Tips To Improve Your Business Blog

Guest Post

A Corporate or Business Blog is like the backbone for your brand’s virtual activities. It keeps you grounded, helps you connect with your clients who become your reader and helps you to reach out to possible, prospective clients.

So, this isn’t a task you can neglect. It’s something that’s important and hence, here are 8 tips to improve your business blogs.

1. Make a Business Plan For Your Blog

Why not! When we have business models and plans for marketing, PR, External
relations; then why not have one for your blog?

So, sit down and make a plan for your blog.

2. Set Goals For Your Business Blog

Like your company has goals for business, you must have a goal for your blog.

Is the purpose of your blog customer care? Is it to pass on messages? Is to provide live updates? Having a Goal is important.

3. Set Up A Team

Once you have your plans in place, it’s important to have a team in place. Either you can recruit specifically for the same (yes, it’s worth the investment) or you could pick up a group of employees and ask them to manage the blog.

4. Regular Analysis

Now that the team is all set, you should meet them regularly and see that the work is rolling. What is the progress? What are the site stats? Is the traffic right and what are people saying? It’s important to keep a tap on happening around your blog and ensure that you’re working in the right direction.

5. Constant Evaluation And Improvement

The analysis should be followed with evaluation that is in depth and structured. Every evaluation should be about improving the content and trying to provide better content to your readers. Even corporate blogs have regular readers who are following your work and progress. It’s important to keep that in mind and work towards giving the best.

6. Integrate Your Blog With Your Social Profiles

This simply means stay connected with your entire virtual presence. Connect your blog to your social networking profiles and vice ? versa. This way it helps people reach you and helps them to find the information they are seeking easily. Moreover, it makes you a more ‘reliable’ entity.

7. Prepare In Advance

Now if your blog is going to be about updates, it’s evident that all the information won’t be present in advance. But it’s always good to have buffer posts. Keep your blog team in the loop. You should have specific days or times to publish your blogs so that your audience has a regular intake of content.

8. Editorial Guidelines

Have editorial guidelines. This is very very important. What content you post and how you post it is very important and creates a lasting impression. It also affects your relationship with the reader and hence, setting your guidelines is a vital element.

Welcome to the Blogosphere Mit

Waaay back when I was in high school, math wasn’t one of my best subjects.  In fact, it wasn’t until after High School before many math concepts actually started to ‘click’ for me.

In my High School days, we didn’t have the vast resources of the internet to tap into.  The closest thing we had to Google was the Oracle of Delphi, which involved a long voyage over the ocean and a lot of buttering up to the pantheons to get a good ranking with the oracle.

Since then, Pythia has relocated to the U.S. and adopted the pen name ‘Google’ which has a fairly decent online presence.

Anyway, my sister to the rescue.  My sister Misty is a Math teacher (and a very good one I might add!).  She has decided to share her knowledge beyond the borders of the classroom, and help those struggling with math by offering great math tips, not only for struggling High School students, but for anyone.

I think her writing style is great, and Misty is the type of math teacher that I wish I could have had back in the day.  I probably wouldn’t have struggled nearly so much. 😛

I strongly recommend checking out her blog, even if you don’t need help improving your math grades, you’ll find this a fun site to check out.

Congrats Misty, for having the guts to get an online presence and helping those in need!  You’re off to a great start!  You can check out Misty’s blog at http://mathhelpforyou.wordpress.com/

Ion Propulsion Marketing

ionCowWhen diving into the world of online marketing, especially for the first time, it’s natural to be excited at the prospect that this may be the ticket to a better life. An escape hatch to lead you out of your current state of self-imposed slavery.

I remember when I first dove into internet business, I wanted to hit that magic number of 10K a month on the very first month that I launched my business. Any why not? After all, the possibilities are endless, right?

There was just one minor catch. I had the drive, an idea, a plan, and some technical know-how, but I was missing one key ingredient. This was an ingredient which can’t be bought. Not really. That ingredient was ‘experience’.

In 2005, I was quite the green-horn, and I poked around blindly just like the rest of us. I chased all the opportunities which offered short-cuts. Sometimes I would get lucky and find info that was actually practical, and based on someone else’s real life experience, saving me some pitfalls along the way.

But when it all came down to it, I had to learn most of it by just doing. In the beginning, I crammed as much as I could into my projects to keep moving forward. At other times, I would just lose steam and felt that I was going nowhere, but I managed to press on.

As I analyzed things along the way, I realized that if I kept a steady forward motion everyday, no matter how small, it had a cumulative effect on my business. If I was stuck in some area, I would move in some other way while figuring my way out of it.

For example, I couldn’t get the hang of Adwords for a while back then. Despite getting pounded, I still kept moving in other areas. Baby steps every day.

Today, I was watching one of my favorite shows, The Universe. Yeah, I like all that geeky cool stuff. There was a segment about ion propulsion, and how this type of engine generates just about enough thrust to lift a piece of paper. Yet, in outer space where there is no friction, this constant stream of ions keeps the spacecraft accelerating faster and faster with time.

In time it achieves a mind boggling velocity. I couldn’t help thinking how this same philosophy applies to internet business. Applying a steady stream of forward motion every day in your business leads to the same effect.

Always keeping your focus forward in your business is just like that steady ion stream which gets you to the other side of the solar system in the most efficient manner.

The ion propulsion method is designed for the long term. Is your business? It’s good to be excited about the short term, but always remember that the longer you’re in the game, the more velocity you can build. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t feel that you’re moving quickly enough.

Slow and steady will compound its way up to ‘holy terminal velocity batman!’ Stick to this mindset, and you can’t lose.

Xingla Pro 4 Has Arrived

Xingla4-Cover smI have to admit, I’m pretty excited to announce that Xingla Pro version 4 has now been officially released!

It’s been a long time coming. Xingla Pro has been rewritten to be bigger and better than ever. It has a new look and new features as well.

Xingla Pro is now completely form based, which means that you no longer need to interact with an internal web browser to build your lists, and add categories.

Also, I was able to streamline the functions so that certain convenience features are automatic.

For example, in Xingla Pro 3 there was a “Find Inactives” button that you would press to see if your list was up-to-date. If not, then Xingla Pro would find the outdated carnivals and prompt you to delete them.

Now this whole process is automatic, every time you start Xingla Pro, or open a list.

Also, the Search Filter is integrated into the list area, instead of being only visible in a popup window as in the previous version.

Carnival submissions with the Auto Submit feature are now very accurate. Xingla Pro submits the carnivals at a slower pace (roughly the time it takes to refresh a web page, for each item), to ensure 100% accuracy.

Here is a quick run down of some of the new features!

Submission Logs – You can now keep track of all your carnival submissions in the submissions logs table. Submissions are listed by many categories including Submission date & time, permalink, list name, etc.

You have the option to export your log entries to a .CSV file as well.

The most recent submission is also noted in Xingla Pro’s taskbar showing the Date & time of the last submission, plus the list name that the post was submitted to. When you mouse over the information, you will see the permalink for that submission in the tool tip.

Carnival Details – Now there’s no reason to piss off a carnival host because your list wasn’t targeted enough. Simply double click an item and a complete description of the carnival is displayed in the tool tip as shown below:

tooltipDescription

Remarks Column – Sometimes a carnival may require some special information from the submitter that needs to go into the remarks field. You can now add a remarks entry to your list item so that it gets submitted every time.

Drag & Drop List Building – When you start Xingla Pro, a complete list of all the blog carnivals is generated from which you can build your lists from. Use the Search Filter to narrow down your results, select the relevant carnivals, and drag them over to the adjoining table.

When you are ready, you can save the items to a new list, or add them to your currently open list.

Auto-Checking of Inactive Carnivals – Every time you start Xingla Pro, or when you open a new list, your list will be automatically purged of any dead carnivals. Blog carnivals come and go for various reasons. The auto-checking feature will ensure that you never submit to an extinct carnival.

Automatic Login to blogcarnival.com – Xingla Pro now has an integrated login field for blogcarnival.com. By default, Xingla Pro will save your login info so that you will be auto-logged in every time you start Xingla Pro. You need to be logged into your free blogcarnival.com account to auto-submit.

Here is a screen shot of Xingla Pro:

Say Hello to AmazingCloaker 7

AmazingCloaker7-box sm

Well, I’ve been hard at work in my secret lab perfecting AmazingCloaker 7. Yes, I really do have a secret lab. I bought it from grandpa Munster just before he moved back to Transylvania back in ’98.

It took awhile to clean out the bat droppings, but I decided to leave the cobwebs in place for dramatic effect and inspiration.

After getting my hair smoked by tripping on one of grandpa Munster’s old test tubes, and falling into the jacob’s ladder which was still plugged in, I had this great idea… Why not take AmazingCloaker 6 to the next level?

One thing that I really wanted to do from the start was to improve the FTP feature and make it easy to use and feature rich. Unfortunately, Adobe Air was limiting what I could do with FTP, because it really doesn’t have that much going on in that department.

As a result, I decided to rewrite AmazingCloaker in good ol’ C++, a programing language where anything’s possible. For you Mac and Linux users, not to worry, AmazingCloaker 7 is also available for you as well!

The FTP feature now has an explore feature so that you can navigate around your website if you wish. This is especially handy if you have shared web hosting, and you want to locate your homepage folder when setting up your FTP list.

I have also added a button which allows you to automatically upload your acslideup folder. Previously, if you wanted to create a slide-up capture form for your website, you had to manually upload this folder by using another FTP client such as FileZilla.

AmazingCloaker is blazing fast. The Adobe Air version was a bit sluggish in certain areas, and that always annoyed me a little. The interface also has additional tabs for the Slideup creator and Article Cloaker, so that you can easily navigate directly to them if you desire.

Speaking of easy navigation, the “Saved Sessions” list is now in the same tab window as the Cloaking fields for easy access and reference.

The slideup creator has been optimized for better performance as well. Now when you select different graphics options, those changes are reflected instantly as you mouse over the selections. Also, you can see other changes (such as picture size or slide-out times) update just by pressing Enter after making your changes.

In fact, every aspect of the AmazingCloaker has been optimized for speed and smooth performance. This is the easiest to use version to date. Here is a screenshot of AmazingCloaker 7:

If you want to get a detailed picture of what AmazingCloaker 7 is all about, you can get the help file here:

And of course, you can find the sales page with videos and demos of some of the features here:

Getting In Touch With Your Core Purpose

YellowBrickRoadIf you’re running or starting a business online, do you find yourself winging it most of the time, drifting from one opportunity to another, putting in a lot of effort with no real return?

More often than not, this is due to a lack of vision as to where we want to go. Just as a vast majority of the population are completely out of touch with their core desires (another subject in itself), many online marketers are equally out of touch with their core purpose.

Why do you want to have an online business?

If you answered something like “because I want to be filthy rich”, or “to make lots of money”, or even “so I can pay my bills”, you probably need to check your core purpose to having an online business.

Let’s say that your answer was to be filthy rich. Now let’s drill down further. Why do you want to be rich? To get revenge on your former lover who said you’d always be a loser? Perhaps you hate your J.O.B., and you want out of the dead-end grind. Let’s go with that one.

So why do you want out of your J.O.B.? Most likely it’s because you don’t want someone else dictating your schedule, and having to depend on someone else for an income. Someone who may not always appreciate you, and who could ruin your life with just two words… “you’re fired”.

In this case, you want to do what you want, when you want, where the income potential is only limited by your imagination and efforts. You want the freedom to write your own ticket. Not having to worry about paying the bills. The freedom to take off to Maui on the spur of the moment, just for the fun of it. Ahhh, FREEDOM. Now we’re on to something.

In this case, it turns out that your core purpose is not to be filthy rich in itself. It’s FREEDOM that you’re ultimately after. In reality, the way that you are generating your income is the very tool by which you can accomplish your ultimate goal… FREEDOM.

Taking a few minutes to drill down your core purpose for being in business can save you a ton of effort in the future. If you’re looking for freedom, then your business needs to be centered around freedom principles.

This would include creating procedures for automating as many aspects of your business as possible. What you can’t automate, you can outsource. Perhaps there are certain aspects that you want to do yourself.

Personally, I enjoy programming, so I create my own software products myself. I could outsource it in a fraction of the time, but this is something that I enjoy, and prefer to play the major role in design and creation.

You may want to completely detach yourself from your business. In this case, you need automation and / or outsourcing procedures in place so that you can step away from your business, and it will run just fine without you. Suppose you were struck by lightning tomorrow? What would happen to your business? Would your family be able to carry on with the income it produces, or would it simply die along with you?

Those are serious things to consider right at the outset. If you get yourself trapped into working your butt off with 18 hour days and little proportional income, where is your freedom? You might just as well be slavin’ for the man; at least you’d be slavin’ less hours.

Take a few moments to drill down your core purpose for business using the technique above, and see where it takes you. Now form your vision based on that, and start building your business, or change course on your existing one, around your core purpose, and someday you’ll thank me for that. 🙂

A Happy Birthday in Beijing

I thought I would share some of the pics that we snapped while here in Beijing.

China is quite beautiful this time of year which forms the perfect backdrop for a perfect birthday. Kevin has just turned 3. Hard to believe. It just seems like yesterday when I saw him open his eyes for the first time. Happy Birthday Kevin!

Tingting’s relatives came by to help celebrate Kevin’s big number 3. Tingting’s younger aunt brought us some traditional hats with scarves from China’s Xinjiang provence which she picked up while visiting. Kevin, Tingting, and I are posing with them in a couple of the pics.

Some of the other pics are from different days. One set is from an amusement park that we took Kevin to, and others from the Beijing Olympic park area where the 2008 Summer Olympics were held.

We will all be back in the U.S. next week. Visiting China never gets old. It seems like that there’s something new to see everytime, making the 13 hour flight well worth it.

Traveling is a great way to build memories that you can carry with you into your old age. Having an automated internet business system makes it that much easier to create those experiences which enhance what’s really important in life. Have you started yours yet? If not, what’s keeping you? As my uncle Joe Nike always says… “just do it”.

You Dont Have to be Human to Make it Big in the Music Biz

I thought this was pretty cool.

This is Miku Hatsune, one of the most popular Vocaloid characters out of Japan.

Hatsune Miku translates as ‘first sound from the future’, which is appropriate since she is the first of Crypton’s “Character Vocal Series”. Miko’s voice is based on Yamaha’s Vocaloid technology.

Back around 2007, Crypton decided to use a different marketing strategy from ZeroG’s. Instead of focusing on high end studios, they changed their focus to the public in general, especially targeting teenagers.

In addition to an extremely appealing voice, they also needed to develop an image. Enter manga artist KEI. Kei had come up with Miko, and gave her the physical characteristics, but left it up to the public to collectively give her personality.

You could say that the collective energies of contributors and fans from all over the world have given Miko a soul of her own, somehow traversing the boundaries between the perpetual near future, and the present. The physical and the virtual.

Miko’s immense popularity has resulted in some pretty astounding sales figures as well. Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia:

The initial sales of Hatsune Miku were so high that Crypton could not keep up with the demand. In the first 12 days of sale, nearly 3,000 sales reservations were made. This was around one sale in 250 in the music software industry, quoted as “an impossible number” by Wataru Sasakithe person in charge of the planning and production company ‘surprise’. Amazon.co.jp stated on September 12, 2007 that they had sales of Hatsune Miku totaling 57,500,001 yen, making her the number one selling software of that time.

The decision to combine Vocaloids with a manga character was an instant magic formula that brought Vocaloids from an obscure niche into a new genre of music. This strategy has opened the floodgates of collaborative content creation which has sparked a whole new dimension in artistic creativity.

Don’t Be a Tool

ow-toolEver notice how the standard push button income is $10,000 per month? Surf out to any sales letter on any “make money online” website, and chances are that for a nominal fee you can make 10k per month with little or no effort.

Just buy their magic pill and you’re on easy street. Not bad for $39 bucks eh? So how come they never work? Why is it that so many internet business hopefuls end up with nothing but a hard drive full of broken digital pipe dreams?

Perhaps it’s because so many people go into this thinking that the internet is this magical universe where endless streams of wealth will pour into their lap if only they can just learn the trick.

That elusive trick that the “gurus” keep to themselves while teasing you with their systems packaged for public consumption, but somehow falling short of the real secrets which are only shared within their elite inner circle. The IM illuminati.

Look Familiar? inner-circle

Is there such a secret society? Or is it merely a myth perpetuated by the over active imaginations of others? One thing I can say about marketing on the internet is that you really don’t need to be looking for that elusive “trick” to be successful.

The internet is a medium in which you can market, just like either a physical storefront, or a flea market booth can also be a medium. There’s obviously many advantages to marketing online, but if you realize that the internet is just another tool that you can use to create an income, your perspective will be much clearer on the bigger picture.

So is 10k a month unrealistic for online marketing? Not at all. Is it unrealistic to expect 10k a month right away with little to no effort? Yes.

Many people give up after a short go around in internet business because they bought into the hype that making money online is easy as pie and completely effortless. They don’t realize that there is a learning curve involved just like anything else. It takes practice to get good at it, and it takes time to build a viable long term business with a loyal following of repeat customers.

If you’re just getting started in Internet business, and if God forbid, you are also in a desperate financial situation, don’t be a tool. Do what you have to in order to get through the crunch, and then come back when you can build a real business without the pressure of having to pay the rent in two days or face eviction.

Building a business for the long term takes dedication along with that four letter ‘w’ word. It’s not always that easy, but it’s also not that difficult. I’m willing to bet that you’ll find this journey to be one the most enjoyable and rewarding endeavors that you may ever experience during these hundred or so trips around the sun. 🙂
